Life Changing Experiences

A few months ago, I was told that I need to start looking for work experience in order to improve my skills and get a taste of what real life work experience is like. A few days later, the school I attend had offered me a place at the Harrow Youth Stop and this is where it all started.

Nervous, I emailed them in order to introduce myself and let them know I was ready to start. Following this, I had a short phone interview with one of the staff members, which helped me to get a better understanding of the company and its attributes.

On the 1st of July, I stepped into what was going to be the best experience of my life so far. Confused, slightly scared, and still nervous I started my first day at the Harrow Youth Stop.

I was presented with a timetable, which instantly made me feel important due to the responsibilities I’d been given, and it also gave me the feeling that my work matters. Everyone was nice, kind and made me feel part of the team, which made me very happy as the Harrow Youth Stop is a place full of hard-working people that are caring and united, so I was very glad to be a part of that environment.

The tasks provided were complex, and every day I had different stuff to do, which improved my confidence as well as other important skills. The telephone training was what I enjoyed the most because it allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. I always like a challenge that helps me grow and improve and speaking through a telephone is something I always was afraid to do. I’d rather have a personal face-to-face conversation, but telephone conversations are also very important. Therefore, the training helped me improve my communication skills, which I am sure will help me in the future.

Overall, my experience at Harrow Youth Stop was life changing. The conversations I had with the members of staff helped me realise the huge amount of work they do every day to help some young people discover themselves. They are all so kind and ready to help and I hope everyone that needs help into seeking a career are going to come here.
